Within in an organism, new properties emerge as the levels become more complex. The smallest unit of a multicellular organism, for example, is an atom. These make up molecules, which have different properties than atoms. Molecules make up organelles, which comprise cells. These cells work together to form tissues, which in turn form organs. The organs make up the organism, which of course is living and has very different properties than any of the lower levels of organization.
